LRCC Reform InitiativeImplementation plan for remaining recommendationsAs a first step in NICNAS's plan to implement the remaining Low Regulatory Concern Chemicals (LRCC) recommendations, a suite of discussion papers has been released for public comment. The papers (covering the remaining items recommended in the Reform Initiative and including an Overview of the Planned Reforms) are available on the special LRCC Discussion Paper web page and also in the latest (November) Chemical Gazette. Comment is sought by 30 November 2006. For further information on this initiative or any of the discussion papers, please contact Bob Graf on 02 8577 8850 or email bob.graf@nicnas.gov.au. Latest Secondary Notification Summary Reports releasedInfineum and HFE-7100Secondary Notification Reports for both calcium long chain alkyl benzene sulphonate (Infineum C9350) and HFE-7100 are now available. Full details of the publication of these reports are given in the November 2006 Chemical Gazette.
Formaldehyde Report available soonAAT agrees to publication of final assessment reportThe final assessment report on Formaldehyde (assessed as a priority existing chemical - PEC - under the Industrial Chemicals (Notification and Assessment) Act, 1989 as amended) will be released (both on the NICNAS website and in hard copy form) by 30 November 2006. The report was previously withheld, following the lodgement of applications in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) for a review of some decisions made by the NICNAS Director concerning requests for variations to the draft report. As the applications were recently withdrawn, the AAT has ordered the applications be dismissed, enabling the report to be published. Z-44New dataNew information about Z-44 (assessed in 2001) has recently become available. A summary of the new information (which indicates a low toxicity profile in a 4-week dermal toxicity study in rats - and hence does not trigger a secondary notification) is available in the latest Chemical Gazette. Polymer in F-25AmendmentAn addendum has been attached to the full public report for Polymer in F-25 to incorporate further toxicological details. Please see the latest Chemical Gazette for details. New chemical substances containing Perfluorinated Carbon ChainPosition paper on data requirement releasedThe widespread occurrence of certain perfluorinated substances in the environment, in certain animal species and in humans, has attracted regulatory concern and/or action globally. Perfluorinated substances are known to be persistent, some of them bioaccumulate (particularly those with long carbon chains) and some have been reported to cause toxic effects in laboratory animals. Given these concerns, NICNAS is adopting a default position for assessing potential health and environmental hazards of new chemicals containing a perfluorinated carbon chain, and has released a Position Paper outlining the default position and the data that would be required where a notifier believes that the default position should not apply for a specific chemical. If you wish to discuss submission of notifications of perfluorinated chemicals covered in the NICNAS Position Paper please contact Hana Hamdan on tel 02 8577 8855 (email: hana.hamdan@nicnas.gov.au) or Louise Stedman on tel 02 8577 8830 (email: louise.stedman@nicnas.gov.au) |
